I think this controversy has just been created through a series of misunderstandings. Everyone loves Eagle Island—from oldest alum to newest camper. It is undoubtedly a special place. A place that has helped shape us all into the people we are today, and that has given us memories and friendships that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. The island holds a special place in each of our hearts… …and I think that is why it has been so hard for older EICers to hear about such changes, and for newer EICers to handle any criticism (constructive or otherwise). Alums are shocked and upset when they hear about changes occurring on the island—concerned that the place that is so near and dear to their hearts is no longer the magical place they knew as a camper, or staff member for that matter. Yet, on the other hand, comments that are made about those changes feel like personal attacks to those people who are still more actively a part of the camp.

What I think needs to be understood is that everything that is being said here is being said out of love for Eagle Island. Everyone is upset because they feel that their beloved EIC is being irreversibly changed, or severely slandered… when in the end we should realize that we all have the same goal in mind… We all want to see the camp continue on for years to come, and provide more and more girls with the kind of summers we all so cherish. There needs to be a middle ground here someplace… such a severe controversy will be nothing but detrimental to the island. Tradition has always been a part of what has made EIC so special, that set it apart from other camps, and kept girls coming back summer after summer. Yet people seem to think keeping traditions will prevent the camp from moving forward and evolving… but this does not need to be the case. There must be a way for the camp to move forward without losing its past. Traditions are the base on which new programming and ideas should be grounded. We can not try for either extreme—there is no way EIC will remain exactly what it was in the past, as it must evolve as the world does… however, this should not mean that we abandon the past for all new ideas… there needs to be a balance… and the EIC community needs to be accepting of all opinions, both new and old.

As for the sailing ceremony… I feel the reason it has been at the heart of this debate is because it is seen by many as a catalyst— the end of the old ceremony marked the start of the end of a series of traditions. Having had the privilege of taking part in both ceremonies (I was part of the last group of girls to have received our monkists the old way in 1999, continued on in the sailing progam until 2002, and was sailing staff in 2004) I can easily say that both ceremonies are beautiful and meaningful, and each is very special to me. The end of the old ceremony caused a big uproar at camp, mainly because it was the loss of something that many people considered a defining moment in their lives. It wasn’t just a ceremony— it was an induction, through which girls were given the chance to be a part of something larger than themselves… part of a sisterhood. The problem now is that it is being made out to be something taboo, dangerous, and lawsuit worthy—which it most definitely was not. The most difficult thing however is that not many can truly understand that, because those who experienced the ceremony still feel the need to keep the exact events of it a secret. The new ceremony too is heartwarming, and incredibly special for those who take part in it. It had been created to try and capture the magic and mystery of the old ceremony in a more “appropriate” way… and it did succeed. It is a beautiful ceremony that has become an incredibly important EIC tradition. Yet, I feel where many find fault with it is that it is no longer something completely special and original. It is a “Scouts Own” ceremony, taken from a Girl Scout handbook… and though it is an amazing ceremony, during which I myself have shed many tears, some of the magic was lost. This is simply undeniable. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to devalue the ceremony in any way shape or form—it is as large a part of my heart as it is for anyone… but it isn’t the same, and it is a change that many people still feel very strongly about.

I hope that what I’ve said won’t offend anyone. I have meant it all only to try to clarify certain things, and shed new light on a debate that has plagued the EIC community for a long time. I truly love this camp, and want nothing but the best for it.

-Kathleen

The problem, in my opinion, about the sailing thing is not the new ceremony. I think it's great. I think it's more of a problem that it isn't as special anymore because people are making less of an effort to keep it a secret. It used to be all about the mystery. Now, not so much.

I see a lot of mixed feelings about EIC on this guestbook. Some of us feel that traditions are being lost and admin is not a real part or participant of camp, whilst some of us see that some changes had to be made.
It is nice to see so much feedback, be it positive or negative.
I personally love EIC, and no matter what's stressing you out, if you had a long day or a wicked sunburn(I'm sure some of you remember the year I matched my staff shirt!), just sitting by the lake with some of your friends seemed to make all of your troubles drift away.
I would not trade my experiences at EIC for anything(I may have gone back and put on some sunscreen before that racing day where we floated aimlessly and I burned to a crisp!)
I think that some of the traditions that have been changed have been changed because as a nation, we are becoming far more concerned (and honestly, lawsuit happy) about health, safety issues, and equality. If someone fell off of the ladder trying to kiss Adam, EIC could theoretically be sued, and we could lose our island home.
The same goes for the old sailing ceremony. I personally do not know the specifics, but many people saw it as hazing, and I'm sure there were parents that did not agree with the practice. I have attended the "new" sailing ceremony, and I think it is amazingly beautiful and meaningful to all of the staff and campers involved. It is one of my favorite things at Eagle Island.
I don't really know what else to say.

Eagle Island holds so many memories... song contests, making the original match-stick staff signs with Hope and Ben... watching incredible sunrises and sets...laughing more than anyone had a right to and loving every minute of the "slow boat" to the mainland... campers sneaking off to a midnight swim to little and big watch, and who could possibly forget the greased toilet seats? Or the wonderful midnight caper of toting the toilet to the main camp flag circle and filling it with flowers...I still remember the director saying "all I see are dollar signs over a broken toilet!" I think I'll go and catch the wind...

Wow, there does seem to be some controversy going on. First let me say that I love EIC, and always will. However, some change is good while others are not so good. Having a fourth grader climb that ladder to Kiss Adam...well, kids were terrified of the ladder when I went there, so I think it is good to change things like that. What might not be good is taking away the...well, for lack of a better term, sisterhood, that we as campers experienced.

Were the Sailors/Islanders the elite...absolutely! Was that good for our young girl self esteem...well actually yes! I knew so many kids that wanted to be in Sailing just to BE the elite; one girl even pushed herself hard to learn how to swim in the off season, just so she could find out how to get a monkey's fist! Did the "hazing" happen...yeah, the worst thing that happened though was a scraped knee! I don't know what people are envisioning. Most of the girls who made it into sailing were not there for their first year, these were the kids who started in 4th and 5th grade and wanted to be the elite, wanted to sail to Chapel Island, wanted to teach the Aquatics kids how to sail, wanted to sail over to Big Watch and eat lunch.

So please think hard. While the administration is trying to fit everyone in the same small box, so no ONE person will be upset, you are actually taking away the sisterhood & sense of belonging that kept kids coming back year after year. It goes beyond Penny Day, Color Wars, Costume Diners, backwards meals and dead milk cartons. This loss of traditions is about loosing what makes EIC magical, what keeps kids coming. EIC should not be run by business suits that stay in the admin building all day, it should be run by a group of people who love camp…who love kids…who can’t envision their lives without camp…and who never really grew out of loving to sleep in a tent. Find THOSE people, and we will start to get the camp we remember back.

As a "ghost" reader of this bulletin board for many years, I have noticed people's reactions to the lack of and the changing of traditions. Tradition is what makes Eagle Island Eagle Island. I was a staff member when "Night Sailing" changed from a ritual to a fireside ceremony. As I recall it was a celebration of each individual's personality and achievements, bringing campers closer together. A bond was formed that night, solidifying a sense of belonging. As a camper from a different decade, I cherished that bond . Knowing I was a part of an old tradition or a new tradition was something that got me through the rough times year round. All I had to do was look at my monkey's fist to remind me I was a part of something special. Traditions, whether old or new, are a part of Eagle Island. Losing them to administration bureaucracy is neither fair nor right.

Hi All,

WOW, another summer looms and I hope you're all excited. After reading some of the comments on this page it frustrates me that this generation question rules, rules and more rules.

We all know EIC is a special place, I know when I was there I felt I was in a place protected from the outside world, and it was great. Time at camp is supposed to be different, so enjoy it, if life was always the same it would be pretty boring...

Any campers attending this summer have lots of fun.

What are you people talking about? I got my monkey's fist in 1989 from a friend. We went night sailing once a session. ;-) We are Islanders, mighty, mighty Islanders...

For any of you ladies that remember me or my sisters (Nicole and Stephanie Dervan) we are thinking about going to women's weekend this year so you should try to make it too!! We have never done it before but I am sure it will be fun to see that camp again. Also, funny story. For anyone who remembers Alexandra Nader, we bumped into each other at graduate school in NYC - we are fellow classmates now. She was like "Did you go to Camp Eagle Island?" Too funny! We were at camp together like 20 yrs ago.

When I was a camper at EIC I remember the frenzy over Jay (no offense if she is reading this) coming on board as camp director (after Cricket left) and changing all the traditions. But then Mimi came back (pregnant, if I recall) and we were all happy again. Some things never change, I guess. One of the best parts of EIC is the folklore/tradition aspect of it.

email me!!!!!

I just love returning to this site every few months, it warms my heart. I spent a truly amazing summer working as a UL at Eagle Island in 1999, the summer after I had finished university. It's safe to say that I've seen a lot of the world since then but my absolute favourite place without question remains Eagle Island. It is a spiritual place and it encourages girls to become strong and know themselves and to face a world that demands a lot of them. I was lucky enough to return for Womens Weekend in 2002 with Fiona Harrison a great friend who I made in the summer of '99 and I don't think it loses any of that great spirit.

"Each of us leaves a part of our heart here" - you bet ya!

Of course counselors can't come back every year for the rest of their lives. That's not the point being made about counselors not coming back. It's that the younger counselors and older campers are not returning to work on staff as much as they once did, in general. Once upon a time a new generation of staff, including many old campers, would take over the task of passing on songs and traditions from the staff who needed to move into the real world. In recent years, the amount of old campers on staff has decreased, helping valuable traditions to get lost. I heard that last year songs were not always sung after meals simply because too few people knew the words/melodies, and I think this is extremely sad. Hopefully things will improve this year.

Eagle Island is a special place that i agree needs to be preserved. I believe that the changes that have been implemented are necessary and in fact have made Eagle Island a better place to be. In regards to previous comments about staff not returning i think this is ridiculous. Staff stop working at EIc for many reasons, yet the major one is that they move on in life. Not many jobs allow you to take every summer off, just because you dont have returning staff doesnt mean that it is making EIC worse, in fact i believe it makes it better. You have numerous different personalities and perspectives and that is what makes a girl well rounded. Camp is a special place and as long as the campers have fun, which i know the majority did the summer i worked than thats all that matters to me

People talk about problems with the sailing program. And although it is sad that the administration is taking away some of the traditions that really are harmless, there is a much bigger problem that has developed with the program. The new basic sailing curriculum is not giving campers enough of a basis to allow them to sail safely and knowledgably. That is one of the most serious problems in my opinion.

However, I would not have been able to express this opinion as a counslor without getting seriously repremanded by the administraion and, most likely, asked not to return next summer. To the person who said that you would have to do something seriously wrong to not get asked back- this is not true. All you have to do is express an opinion. I believe that I was asked back because I kept my mouth shut. I wish I hadn't.

ok so first of all i want to say that i lovee eagle island! so much! and everyone keeps talking about how its changing and its becoming ruined. i just dont see how. people are talking about the names. personally, i liked how they had names and i had fun figuring out what all the counselors names were. some of my counselors even nicknamed me christmas since my name is merry. and about the counselors not going back. not everyone can live their whole life working at eic. although most probably want to. most of the counselors from this summer just did it as an experience and now theyre all in college and probably going to go to another camp next summer or travel the world with their friends. actually, this past summer was my favorite so far. even though all the counselors were new. i became really close with a lot of my counselors and i actually keep in touch with a lot of them too. you have to realize most of them probably arent coming back and its not because of pay or not liking the camp.

i miss you all! cant wait until next summer!

Actually, Anna, there was a sort of hazing for sailors several years back. It ended in 1999. I agree that it was best to end this practice. But I felt that the ceremony that replaced the hazing was wonderful and special, the mystery of it all only adding to that, and wish that it had continued to remain as such.

I would like to say one thing, and one thing only about a previous comment. The monkeys fist ceremony is, and never was, hazing. it was never meant to be hazing, it was a bonding experience for the sailing units.
I came to EIC through a lifelong friend 4 summers ago, scared out of my mind of not knowing anyone except her, and afraid of having such little connection to the outside world. that was one of the best summers of my life, as well as the following two, where I came back without my friend. Getting my monkeys fist was one of the most memoriable things in my life. I remember the entire night vividly. As well as the next two years, when I saw so many others get theres. I can see where the "hazing" accusation comes from, my last summer there we did tell the girls that they had to sail, and a boat was tied to one of the docks, and girls got scared. the only reason we had to make up the lies was because the truth was getting out. Councelors were making monkeys fists infront of the new sailors, and telling them about the cerimony they should know nothing about. I knew nothing about who made my monkeys fist until the following morning after getting it.

Its not hazing, we just wanted to keep our traditions intact. They didnt even hold the ceremony in the old dining hall my last summer there, having it on the boathouse porch seemed so out of place.

I didnt go back last summer because of a school trip that got in the way... and Im almost glad I didnt although I love that place so much, because of all the bad things Ive heard about it....
it makes me sad that this is happening to my island home...

Hi everyone. I'd like to begin by saying that I am posting this because I care about EIC, and wanted to add my thoughts and opinions to this discussion. I've broken my post into 3 parts, and this is the first.

I too am someone who has spent my summers at Eagle Island for countless years, who has grown up on the island, going as a camper, through the CIT program and returning the next year as a counselor.

From my perspective, there are some fundamental problems with the way the camp is being run. Of all the issues that have been brought up, I believe retention of staff is a major one. There are many things that make Eagle Island the special place that it is, but committed, EIC-friendly staff are the people who make camp such a great place to be summer after summer.

The best way for this to happen is for these counselors to have an understanding of what EIC means to them. Counselors who can tell you in a heartbeat where their favorite rock is, what fork they think is the coolest in the dining hall, or why that tent at the far end of Lakeside is their favorite on the island. This isn’t something that can just be learned during staff training (which, at least when I was a counselor was pretty much a joke), but knowledge that is acquired over time.

If counselors are not returning, it is very difficult to build the kind of atmosphere and shared experience that has kept EIC going for decades. So, why is the majority of staff not returning?

This, at least in my experience, is for a few reasons.

1. No direction. When I was a counselor, we barely received any kind of useful staff training. Sure, we knew generally what was expected of us as far as keeping campers from danger, and we learned some helpful (but as far as the EIC administration was concerned, mandated) potentially lifesaving techniques and procedures, but as far as how to relate to campers, how to keep them occupied, how to get them to quiet down at lights out—we were going completely blind. The only thing that helped was the information that the few returning counselors and had-been campers could provide. Without this, the new-to-EIC counselors would have been completely lost.

Unfortunately, this complete lack of direction continued through the summer. We had no staff meetings to update us on how we’ve been doing or to discuss things we could work to improve. When my final review came, I had no idea what the assistant director was going to tell me—because I had no idea how the administration even thought I was doing. Which leads to #2.

2. No interaction. During my counselor year, I would have been surprised if even the camp director could have named more than 10 campers in the dining hall. The administration kept themselves sequestered in every way—they ate at their own administration table meal after meal, and retreated to the Ad Building straight after. I saw the camp director outside of main camp five times the entire summer—two of those times were at final night campfires, and no, the camp director unfortunately did not participate or stay until their conclusion.

If the camp’s administration is hardly interacting with campers or counselors, it must be difficult, if not impossible, to know who is doing well at their job and who needs help. If the administration did manage to do so, I never saw the effects of this, as I cannot recall any help or guidance being offered to anyone.

After the summer was over, through the fall and winter, I heard no word from the camp director about being asked back. I also heard no word about not being asked back. Though my favorable review at the end of the summer had lead me to believe that I had been very good at my job, I had no idea what the camp director thought.

Given my personal experience, I am not at all surprised that most counselors are choosing not to return to camp. And of those who would want to return, the tedious process of actually getting back on the island makes it nearly impossible to actually do so.

Only one person that I worked with was contacted by the administration. This person was invaluable to them because she knew a great deal about the sailing program—while they did not visit Adirondack or Islanders the entire summer. Those of us who did not receive a response were forced to contact the camp director about coming back. This is something that should never happen, as it is the people who are running the camp’s onus to make sure they attract and retain counselors who love the island.

As so many posters on this site have shown, loving Eagle Island is not a difficult thing to do. Loving your time there, the people you meet, and the experience you share is a common thread that has passed through generations of campers and counselors. Sadly, many recent posts have suggested that this thread is breaking.

As a counselor, I worked at the waterfront. I took a lot of pride in making swimming lessons fun—something I never had as a camper. In fact, I remember some of my campmates crying before swimming lessons on cold mornings. The people who ran the waterfront had thought of fun songs and games to help get the kids in the water—and while we did spend time on lessons, we also made sure to play some kind of game that reinforced what was learned at the end.

From what I’ve heard, all of this is gone now. Baywatch runs which had been the only way to get into the deeper part of Red for years are now outlawed. I have no idea why.

From what I’ve been hearing, and from what I saw during my last summer at E.I.C., most of the “fun” of camp is being wrested away from campers. And what’s the use of going to camp if you aren’t allowed to have fun?

Numerous posts have talked about traditions; about how they are dangerous and acts of hazing. What all of you have failed to mention is the sisterhood and incredible friendships that have emerged from those experiences. As one of those sailors that was “hazed”, I can honestly say I would not give it up for anything. It was one of the most incredible nights of my life, as I really felt a part of something special, something that can never be replaced.

Everyone here is right to be concerned. Eagle Island is changing, and not for the better. Tradition is a big part of this. The fact that many camp traditions, including Penny Day and the above mentioned sailor ceremonies, are being banned shows complete disrespect for our camp. The reasons cited for doing so are ridiculous. A light peck on Adam's nose is hardly a health hazard and the sailing monkey fist ceremony was far from the hazing people make it out to be; instead they are both oppurtunities for the girls to form lasting memories and bonds with one another.

Not allowing campers to sing and play in the dining hall, something that becamse more prevelant during my last few years as a camper and my one year on staff, because it annoys administration members is rediculous. Eagle Island is a summer camp, one that should allow girls the freedom to express themselves and have fun. Taking away dessert because dinner was to ramboctious (campers had spoons on their noses and one was making grasshopper noises) was one of the worst things I have seen during my nine years on the island, it put such a sour taste in everybody’s mouth.

I think the current administration needs to take a good look at the enrollment numbers and the staff retention rates and ask themselves if they are enacting the most positive changes for the camp. As of right now, I believe that answer is no and something, before our beloved island is shut down, needs to be done about it.

I would just like to comment on some of the things that have been said here. I will admit that I have only been to EIC for the past 2 years, and not as a counselor. As many of you know, I was the second cook my first year, and the Head Cook this past year, as well as working on property staff for family camp.
First of all, if you are coming to EIC for the money, you are here for the wrong reason. EIC is about the kids, and the experience of being on an island in one of the most beautiful regions of this country. It's about making friends with amazing people from all over the world, and maybe learning some valuable skills along the way. I took advantage of the opportunity to learn to sail, as well as get my red cross certification in small craft sailing and basic sailing.
As far as the 'camp names' go, it wasn't like we were hiding our names from the campers, it was like a game, and at the end of the session we actually played a game to find out everyone's real names. I personally thought it was fun, even though everyone already knew my real name, seeing as I was staff the previous year. We had a lot of fun with it, and even called each other by our camp names on days off. I didn't find that any of the girls were offended by this idea.
And you may say that as a cook I didn't have time to interact with the kids, but that is far from the truth. I spent a lot of my free time interacting with the kids, going sailing, doing arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, or activities in the lodge. I will hazard to say that most of the kids liked me, and I have the fan letters to prove it!
I think that the majority of the staff truly cares about the girls, and wants them to have a good time. There are always a few bad seeds, regardless of where you are, but there weren't many at EIC. It is unfortunate that a lot of staff doesn't return, but we have a lot of international staff, and also, to be quite honest, some of us are in school or trying to start our careers, and it might not be viable to make a life-long career out of EIC(as much as I would like to!).
The tradition thing is not really my subject, since I am new to EIC, but it seems to me from stories I have heard about traditions that have been changed is that there was always good reason. It isn't safe on any level to let a 7 year old (or a 14 year old for that matter!) climb a ladder to kiss a moose that has been there for 100 years! C'mon now! And some of the sailing traditions that were done away with were downright hazing, plain and simple.
I hope that this letter will help to calm some of the concerns of parents, previous staff, and past, present, and future campers.

'You are the moment that I seek, you are my strength when I am weak
You are my one true home'--Star's Song

i am offended by a lot of the comments that are on this page they are full of hate and disrespect. i have been a girl scout and worked at eagle island for a good chunk of time and a lot of these messages don't seem to follow the girl scout promise nor law. i am offended when some people r saying "I want to know the EIC of before"...." when counselors Actually cared"... for as long as i have worked on the island i have CARED ABOUT EACH AND EVERY CHILD i have come in contact with. Some people r upset that some of the traditions r going...ok...lets talk about that: 1)some people r mad about penny day( that the girls can't kiss Adam)(our prized moose in the lodge)we r all adult or a least close to it lets think about how safe it is for a forth grader to climb a ladder by herself to kiss a dirty moose...that is why we have come up with a fun alternative to the "penny day" evening fun
2)but bigger than that a lot of people r mad about the sailing program...lets talk about that a little. SSSSSome people r upset about the sailing program being change, but if u actually paid attention to the new program and STOP putting it down u would see that it is changing for the better. because girls scouts is about every girl everywhere and helping girls grow strong the sailing program needed to be changed. we could not have a program that was exclusive and seeming better than the rest. Not all but MOST past sailers have this attitude that they are "better" than the rest of the kids at camp. and that attitude had to be broken.sorry. Other older girl programs had to be introduced to the girls. is it fair that before other programs were introduced the only choice you had once u hit a certain age was sailing? i don't think so. A lot of the girls that are in sailing now love the new program except those of course that want to feel above the rest...3)Someone in their comment talk about money. that u don't get paid enough well... if u r worried about how much money u r goin to make working at EIC then u don't need to be there.EIC is not the kind of job u get for the money its the kind u get for the love of working with children. 4)i read a comment about the fact that this past summer the couselors had camp names....r u kidding me. it is OK to try new things and i think the girls had fun with it. WHY ARE U MAD??? ( BECAUSE U DIDN'T COME UP WITH THE IDEA?)at ALOT of other camps the counselors have camp names. Take our other Girl Scout camp "THE OVAL" all of the couselors and administration have camp names and it fun for the girls. it is not Ridiculous that we had camp names its adding something new for the girls to enjoy. its not that serious if they already know our names no one cares it OK..lol... we don't get mad or anything. ITS JUST A FUN LITTLE GAME THAT BRINGS THE CAMP AS A WHOLE TOGETHER.
people talk about not getting hired back or not being invited back after u have gone through CIT training...lets think about it if u weren't invited back u probly did something severe enough to not be invited back... maybe put girls in danger, just been plan lazy, or u just played around to much n didn't do ur job. instead of trying to blame the administration at the camp or the counsel for why u hate the camp or why camp is bad....look at urself n see what u did...did u try to make camp better? when is the last time u actually saw the camp? is all of ur hate and jealousy from stuff u heard through someone else? if u love EIC so much why talk so negative for others to see... come visit n see that the talk is all wrong EIC is still full of love n children laughing. STILL THE PEPPIEST CAMP I EVER DID SEE!!!

I too was a camper that returned as a counselor, and during my first summer on staff I had a great time (disregarding some administrative oddities). The real shock came once the summer ended... I had received an excellent end of the summer evaluation… and yet was “not invited back” for the following summer. I was confused and hurt by this unexpected decision… I was not allowed to return to the place I loved so much, and I never received any explanation as to why. Having to deal with this ultimatum, I have worked other summer jobs at other camps… yet hearing about EIC’s current situation makes me even angrier and more confused about what happened to me just a few summers ago. I would like to return as staff once again, yet, though a camper for 6 years and a supposedly “valued” staff member for one, I am no longer welcome on the island…. However, even if I was, due to my current situation the pay simply would not be enough (I feel this is also a reason why many staff members can not return.) I wish there was a way I could help the camp out even without being able to be physically present on the island, but I honestly do not know how. I want to see the camp continue on and be able to give other girls as much as it gave me. I am the person I am today because of Eagle Island… I learned life lessons, and made life-long friends. I hold the memories of my summers there close to my heart, not allowing them to be tainted by one unfortunate interaction with administration.

Mimi-
There were many counslors who had been campers, but most of us couldn't stay any longer with the increased number of these ridiculous rules. So the numner of counslors whose names were known are slowly dwindling. I would love to be a counslor again, but I don't know if im willing to risk having the camp ruined for me, by one unpleasant summer.

I didn’t want to give my name because I am hoping to be hired if not this next year then the next as a counselor. At this point I think at least some people already know who I am I did give quite a few hints. I have decided that if the camp does not want to hire me because I love it so much that I want the camp I love back; then there is nothing I can do. But I do hope that my views would not keep them from hiring me. I feel that I would make a great counselor and I would be extremely dedicated to the campers and the island I love so much. Having put that out of the way, I am glad that so many people do still care, at camp at times it felt as though no one did. I was reading some of the posts to my mom and I came across Mimi's name and my mom yelled out "ohhhh I know her" haha (my mom is Trudy or Gertrude and was a counselor in the late 60's early 70's and a camper before that). I have often wished that the camp could still be like my mom describes it, it sounded like so much fun, with counselors that still actually care. I just hope that we can bring that back, it is horrible that it has been lost, but I am hopeful that we can change the camp back to the place everyone remembers.

I do understand feeling you need to be anonymous in your comments about Camp Eagle Island. It's unfortunate but I can relate. However, I wish there was a way to know if we're reading anonymous posts from more than one person or just one.

The idea that the campers can't be told the counselors name is ridiculous. I teach 5th grade and the students all know my name - first name, last name, address, phone number. Counselors certainly don't have to give out phone numbers, email or snail mail addresses.

Also, if a camper really cared they would probably be able to find out many counselors' names. I'm reminded of a camper who spent much of the summer trying to figure out who the "Tilly" of each counselor was (and being quite successful). Are the counselors forbidden to receiving mail (which would have their name on it)? Is their clothing searched for name tags? Do books have the owners' name blacked out? Is stationary with the counselors name confiscated? I'm sure not, so the information is out there. Are there ANY counselors who were once campers? If there are then some camper will know their name. All you are doing is setting up a situation where the campers are obsessed with finding out the names of their counselors. It seems like a ridiculous situation.

I too have noticed that we have had very few postings by campers. While sometimes they drive me crazy (as I teacher I have to hold back from correcting their spelling) I do miss hearing the news of the summer and knowing that camp is continuing to reach the girls. Is there some other website? Are there no older girls? Or do they not feel the same way about camp?

Finally, the most important issue is being overlooked. I've heard that the New Jersey councils are being combined. When that happened here in Massachusetts many, many camps were closed and sold. What's happening with the council and how will it affect Camp Eagle Island?

Although my days at Eagle Island are long over I have been thinking about it a lot. I was reminded again last night while seeing the fruity cheerios commercial and began to sing along with happiness runs. I am not sure of why EIC has been on my mind lately but the reasons why the island is so dear to my heart are the wonderful memories I have. It is a shame to hear that camp may not continue to give the campers and staff the same feeling. I would hope that any ways to keep EIC going strong would be welcomed by the council as I know is welcomed by all of you whom read and sign this guestbook. To me, EIC was a safe haven where I got to learn a lot about myself, met lifelong friends, and most importantly gave me the confidence to grow up to be the person I am today. There was no feeling of judgement or negativity on the island, just a common unity in the love for EIC.(and lots of laughs) I have not been to EIC since 1995 and I am longing to be back. Just the other day I was visiting my sister Susy (also a camper and staff member from the 80s and 90s) who was talking about making a summer trek from Florida to EIC for an upcoming family camp session to share the island with her 2 little girls. I can only hope that when they are old enough to attend EIC(they are still in diapers so we have some time) that many of the same traditions will remain , ontinuing to make EIC a special place for all who live on the island.

It is unfortunate that those who care about the island feel the need to remain anonymous on the camp's own website, but I'm afraid that currently, that is the only way to bring up the issues that need to be discussed. Has anyone from Council been reading the entries on this guestbook recently? I would hope so because I think these entries are very telling of the decline of the camp many of us love and the rise of a seemingly apathetic environment where the majority of staff members see seniority as an excuse to become more distant from the campers and less involved with the camp overall.
It strikes me that not a single camper has written on the guestbook since this summer to deny any of the negative claims that have been brought up. No campers have even used the guestbook to express their attachment to the island or to share memories of the summer, recently (except for those who were also criticizing the current management of the camp). Like others, I am not suggesting that Eagle Island has become a horrible place. It remains magical, but I attribute this to the campers and the few staff members who see camp less as a business operation and more, simply, as a place to have fun and develop meaningful relationships.
The issue of safety was brought up previously. Of course, safety is extremely important, but perhaps the best way to keep campers safe would be to encourage good, knowledgeable staff members to return. This way, campers (and staff) would be safer on sailboats and on hiking and canoeing trips. Very few program staff members have returned in recent years, largely due to clashes with the administration. At the same time, many return year after year to work on property staff. Maybe if the program administration adopted a similar attitude to that of the property staff, they too could draw in valuable staff members.
Also, in reference to the confidentiality of staff members (mandatory camp names and rules prohibiting staff members from telling campers their age), I respect those who choose not to divulge their private life to campers; however, I personally do not want to approach camp as something separate from real life, because it is not. I want the relationships formed at camp not to be some superficial creation, but rather relationships that extend beyond the camp setting. This does not mean that I think staff members should tell campers everything they tell other staff members, because this would definitely not be appropriate, but I do think that the camper/counselor relationship can be one of friendship and not just one created by power structures. What do others think?

Linking harsh feelings against the current admin with a name could risk the possibility of a job at camp and staying connected to the island. If you're too old to be a camper and you can't bear to stay away, you don't want to risk not being able to go back. As far as I know, people don't like to hire those who are openly against their policies. It's sad but true.

This post is in response to the unsigned recent post... First a comment... Please sign your posts... it will carry more weight and we should not be afraid for anyone to know how we feel. Second, in response to a comment you made "I just want back the camp i remember, the camp where the counselors are more dedicated to the campers then the admin" I also think it is VERY important for the administration to be dedicated to the campers and the other programs EIC offers. If this is not happening, that is really too bad. I hope that some staff who have this concern can find the courage to talk to someone at council. Thanks!

eagle island has always been like a 2nd home to me, i started family camp when i was 3 years old and just finished my 7th summer as a camper. my mom went to E.I.C. as a camper and as a counselor. My favorite part of camp has always been the tradition, and since my 1st year of camp 7 summers ago the tradition i once loved has started to diminish, i can understand that the administration at E.I.C. has a responsibility to the parents to keep their children safe, but the extent to which they have gone is changing the camp for the worse. not only have they made the camp primarily focused on rules but they have also made it so the counselers dont even want to come back, unless of course it is to be a part of matenice. i miss the days when the couselors could actually have fun with their kids and do all the silly stuff they wanted. i remember only a few years ago when counselors would play with the walkie-talkies and now the instant a counselor even tries to have some fun, they are told that "walkies are only to be used for important situations". while i understand that the walkies cant always be used to have fun, once in a while they could bend the rules. because so many of the former counselors have not retured we have an entire staff of people who dont know any of the traditions all us campers hold so dear. i spent 4 sessions in the sailing program over my years at E.I.C. and as a sailer have come to expect at least some traditions to be kept, for example the logs from the past 2-3 years have only continued because of the older girls who want them to still be kept not in any part by the sailing staff. This year during scout's own i was horrified at the lack of tradition and how the couselors didnt even seem to care. If you think this post is just alot of complaining, im sorry, but it is because i love this camp so much that i cant keep silent. I just want back the camp i remember, the camp where the counselors are more dedicated to the campers then the admin. i want the tradition that has been kept since my moms days to not be forgotten, and all of the campers that are dedicated to E.I.C. want the same. while it sounds like i am ranting about what a horrible camp E.I.C. has become, im not and i would still recomend this camp to everyone, it is a place that has a certan undescribable...thing that almost everyone feels after only a few days. i love this camp with all my heart and all i want is for E.I.C. to not become the camp i think it is on its way to becoming. please, all the women here who love E.I.C., please tell the admin. what u want, dont let E.I.c. change from the camp we all love, keep it for all the future generations who will love it as much as we do.
thank you

Aw... Some of those traditions are the reasons I went back year after year. Are formal dinner, x-mas in July, Human Croquet, Staff Intros, and the last night campfire with wish sticks in the lodge and dance party in the dining hall still around? Do you still sing Green Trees, Peace and Taps after the all camps? Do you still dance around to Buttercup and Oh What a Night? Those still rank high on my favorite song list after all these years.

Cathy, Sure some of the larger camp traditions are around: reded and song contest. They are still a great deal of fun for everyone on the island! However, some of the smaller but almost equally fun traditions have sadly fizzled out... such as penny day, and broadway night etc.

Enjoy the rest of summer, folks. I'm hoping to take another paddling trip to Upper Saranac this September. It's glorious (when it's not freezing!).

Last week I was camping at Rollins Pond with my daughter, partner, and a friend and we had a wonderful time. My daughter has fallen in love with the song "Moon on the Meadow" and it is now firmly stuck in my brain!

Hello all! Well we didn't ever believe that this year would ever come, but this is the first summer in almost a decade that a Weill/Steck has not gone to camp. However, I guess we've decided to make the yearly trip up to EIC more of a pilgrimmage- so no need to panic, we will be on the island...for work weekend!... (with the dads). We are both ecstatic about returning to our island home and once again renewing all of our old, fond memories. !!! We are so terribly sad to hear about the partay truck! Such good times!....Maybe all that stuff counselors used to tell us about how flammable the "tinder and duff" is- was all lies!!!!!! ahh... just kidding. We're glad to hear that everyone is safe...... (and that the island didn't explode)...((knock on wood)). Anyway, we just came back from a lovely visit with our dear friend Lizzie Reilly, who is THE best ColdStone Creamery employee...EVER!. She even sang.... and yes we have it on video or dvd for purchase (please contact your mom).... anyway, it just got us thinking about how great it is that we are still so close with our camp friends of many years. Then that led to reminiscing ......and eventually to this guestbook entry. That's all for now. Hope to maybe see some familiar faces at work weekend. Best wishes to all.

I was surprised to read Mimi's entry about trying to bring the girl to visit camp. Mimi was the director my first year at camp, and I felt welcomed by the close, friendly community on the island. I understand that they can not allow the campers' families to visit, because that would get out of hand, but I don't see how the occasional visitor could hurt. I wonder if this policy includes all types of visitors- I was always thrilled when old counselors, or even directors like Mimi, came to visit. I was also shocked by something I heard today-I'm not sure about the details, but apparently counselors are no longer allowed to tell the campers their real names or ages. This seems ridiculous to me. I realize that the administration wants to be very clear that the counselor is in charge, and they should not be friends, but I think that's crazy. The counselors were one of the main reasons I loved the place. I always looked up to and admired them, and always respected them, perhaps more so, because I knew them. It seems to me that the atmosphere up there is growing colder, the rules stricter and less friendly. I know safety is the number 1 concern, but everything seemed to run pretty smoothly in the past. I miss camp, but maybe the camp I miss doesn't quite exist anymore.

Hi:

My daughter is up at eagle island now for session 2 and 3. I know there isn't alot of campers I believe 69 campers may be an accurate number but I do think that is a good thing. I have gotten several letters from her she did paddlers and also sailing program and she seems to be very happy. My daughter is soon to be 13, the day of bus taking off there was alot of young campers going up on the bus. I think alot of the older girls stay for the whole summer because they like it so much. The amount of girls may have to do with how far the camp is, not everyone feels comfortable shipping there kid off seven hours away to a real remote island. I was skeptical last year but my daughter came home and was happy. I don't think you should judge camp based on people you talk to in montclair, I was not very comfortable when I went to open house last year. The people at the camp aren't the people at montclair, counselors come from all over. I will send my daughter again, maybe not for a month because I miss her. Eagle island is a great experience for girls and memories nobody can ever take away. I have friends that send their kids to camp and none of them are equal to eagle island.

I had a disappointing experience while trying to bring a potential camper to see EIC.

My family spent the month of July on Lake Champlain, on the NY side. For the first two weeks we were there with friends who are looking for a camp for their 9 year old daughter to go to next year. Being so close to the island I wanted to take Mollie and her mom over to see the camp. However, when I called camp the director said visitors weren't allowed. She said if visitors were allowed there would be too many visitor, and she said that we could come back Work Weekend.

This was an unrealistic suggestion - a 7 hour drive up to see an empty, closed up camp is different from a 1.5 hour drive over to see girls in action and get a feeling for the camp, Later I called council and spoke to someone who said she had something to do with camp. She confirmed that this was their policy and again offered work weekend. (It wasn't clear whether short term visits were allowed then, or if my friend would have to volunteer for the whole weekend just to see the camp.)

This is certainly not the experience I've had when visiting boys camps for my sons, and at my school when have have visitors walking through daily.

This seems a very short-sighted marketing policy, in this day and age. Parents want to see what they are spending their money on. Perhaps this attitude partially explains why there were only 69 campers in camp that session. A shockingly low number. Mollie (the 9 year old) would be a great camper - positive, enthusiastic, and a water bug. Her parents are looking for an affordable program. But frankly, I don't feel confident about promoting the camp, if people aren't allowed in to see the program and feel the atmosphere.

When I was the director I treasured the occasional visitors (since the island is so far away we had an average of 1 visit a week). When Cricket was the camp administrator she worked for every single camper - and the camp was overful.

This policy wastes the greatest asset Camp Eagle Island has - the physical site.

Ok so now I have time to write - I had no idea that this site existed until a few days ago, when I had a de ja vu experience. I decided to go swimming early one morning, I was in the water and I looked up at the sky which was kind of cloudy from the last nights rain and all of a sudden I remembered swimming at camp. And I found myself missing the beauty and peacefulness of the Adironacks. It prompted me to look for this website. (By the way Jackie - I laughed when I saw your message re: the watermelon seed theory because I remember learning that too.)

For those who don't know me, I was a unit leader for Lakeside unit (summer 2005), for any campers who read this and attend camp in 2006, hope you have a wonderful time and look out for those spiders....

Take care, Alicia

I had a lovely time at Women's Weekend as usual, what a great community! What a beautiful place. See you there next year -

p.s. sigh, the very next entry was spam. I have now also removed the ability to put links in the comments.

A NEW BOAT FOR EIC
Our daughter Rebecca Bar has been an EIC camper for 5 years, and has learned to sail there, and she loves the island as much as everyone else on this message board. Her grandfather Harald Harris died last year, and in his memory we have made a major contribution towards a new sailboat, which is now in the water at EIC. Come see the "Harald" at family camp or work weekend.

Everyone can do something keep EIC sailing smoothly: donate some time or money to help maintain the camp and its equipment, go talk to a Girl Scout troop about EIC so that new campers will discover it, ask your company to match your donation to Friends of Eagle Island. Alumna are powerful !!

Dear Log,
The summer Solstice this week brought back more fond memories of life on The Island. The longest days here in MA don't come close to the days up in the Adirondacks when at this time of year, light would continue well beyond 9pm. Seeing the entries from Babs in PA, who I certainly do remember, Mimi, bringing back the fun of Broadway Night and Hernando's Hideaway, and my own list of memories from my last entry, all make the beginning of this summer very magical. I hope that all who spend time on The Island will continue to find magic, lasting friendships and a sense of wonder in the beauty of the Adirondack summer!

Good to see so many friends have found their way to this site. Every year around this time, the memories start to come back into focus of Camp. Working with Scooter and Pat (my brother), Waterskiing, swim lessons, Ice Cream Parties and so many more. Working family camp and then staying in some of the chilly days of ealry fall closing camp down on work weekends. Enough memories to last a life time. Hope all is well with the Friends of EIC

So I check this guestbook very often (read: almost daily) and realize that I have not signed in years, but an incident that happened this weekend prompted me to finally give in. I was at my house down the shore and was having a slice of watermelon with my grandfather. After a couple minutes I mindlessly picked up one of the seeds and squeezed it between my thumb and first finger and it shot across the room. Instantly I smiled at the memory of Basic Sailing in the Old Dining Hall and obviously, "The Watermelon Pit Theory."

I think about camp and the amazing friends I made there quite often and I get a slight pang in my heart everytime I remember that another summer will go by without my stepping foot on the island.

I was for one wonderful summer in 1970 the camp director of Eagle Island...Gail my wife was the camp nurse...certainly the reason I got the job!! Both of our children ages 8 and 5, lived on the island with us.... We remember the warm summer days (actually only one or two of those) and the rest of the time wrapped up in sweaters and Sweat shirts...I worked for a number of camps during the years and the group of staff we had were the best trained I had ever worked with...does anyone remember Corky??

I just read Beth Bloor her messages and then I read alot more (Ellen Winn,Mimi, Mary, Judy)from those that I still remember from my camp years at EIC. Brings back good memories by reading all these messages. I used to keep in touch with many EIC friends, but then lost contact with most everyone. I mail once in a while with Sally (Burns)Pinto.

Hey Mary and Terri, I lost your address again...sorry!

Although it sounds like the memories and fun times continue on the island, i have heard and in looking at the programs now provided for girls... the isle just does not mean what it used to for the campers. I do respect that it continues to provide the magical experience that only summer camp can provide to girls in a safe, caring, and unique atmosphere. Although, I understand that the generations have come and gone and that Eagle Island is forever changing, I just wish that future campers will have the experience of Eagle Island Camp as it has been preserved for many, many years. I have heard from campers that had last been to the island a few short years ago that traditions have died out, the boats are in terrible disrepair, and that the words of the songs that had once been our guides to life have since been forgotten. However, not all is lost, I truly do believe that its history and grandeur can still be preserved. I only ask that returning staff and campers provide the same incredible experiences and instill the undying respect and love for the beautiful island home that is our Adirondack oasis that was ever-present when I was a camper. What eagle island has provided me with during my years in attendance has been unfathomable. With all of my heart, I hope that the traditions, experiences, and memories that characterize Eagle Island Camp as so many generations had known it, is continued for many more years to come...

Does anyone have a tape of campers or staff singing the songs from the song book? I am trying to get one together to send to the new staff members to listen to before they get to the island so they will have a a little idea of the tunes and not be so overhwelemd during staff training. Any ideas or volunteers to make one?
Thanks,

Hey all -- Just a quick note really to Nancy Dolan (no clue if you read this or not!) who I ran into at the start of the Brooklyn Half Marathon last Saturday! Apologies for not being more enthusiastic, it took me about 10 miles of running (and a confirming search of the race results) to realize it was indeed Nancy!

The Island is everywhere you go of course. I see EIC pals often (both close to home and afar – hey there Jessika in London!) and have been shamelessly downloading camp-ish songs for my ipod lately – Windy gets better with every listen!

Best to all – Ellen

I had an EIC memory as we watched the old musical "The Pajama Game" the other night. I'd never seen it before and suddenly the song "Hernando's Hideaway" is being sung. Back in the days of an 8 week summer there used to be Broadway Night as the big all camp during 3rd session. One summer the sailors did "Hernando's Hideaway" as our song. The song was completely unfamiliar to me when we did it, but watching the movie I remembered doing it in the dark with lighters and someone looking for Boopsey, just like in the movie. It made me laugh.

Broadway night disappeared along with 4th session.

Friends were Candy Swan, Sarah Hoover, many others. Counselors Sunny, Bats, Sally, Treader, Patty. Amazing 5-day sailing trip to Lake Champlain. Tremendous crush on kitchen boy Michael Mulhern. Would love to be reminded of many details I haven't thought of in ages...

Spirit of Eagle Island:

We ask that you guard these wishes through the winter months so that all who light a candle to your spirit tonight may be warmed by their memories until we meet in comradship again.
February 25, 1973
9:00 P.M. E.S.T.

Dear Log,
I haven't written to you since the summer of 1972. I didn't know that when I left that summer it would be many years before I would see the familiar shapes of the service dock, boathouse and lodge again. I recently found the above message on a wood block that Joe Tucker cut. We all carried these away with us that August and waited to light our candles at 9:00 P.M. E.S.T. on February 25, 1973.
It is around this time of year, when I would begin talking to sailing staff about what songs we heard that might be good for Song Contest, which boats would need extra care to be ready in time for the first session, who would be back and when would we all get together for the annual winter reunions? So much time now would be spent in dreaming and planning for the summer ahead. How many Skippers would be celebrated, could we really win a race on Sunday up at the old Saranac Inn if we waxed the hulls, what new ceremonies would we dream up and how many sailors could we really fit into the unit, under the radar screen of the dreaded "health" inspectors?
As much fun as this time of year was, we could never imagine what each new summer would bring. The smell of the musty old books in the lodge, with the amusing and antiquated adventures of "Linda Marsh goes to....", dancing the Russian Trioka in the lodge 'til we all fell down laughing, learning the Swedish words to "Who Can Sail Without the Wind", creating an all camp we called "The Olumjacks" with Joe Tucker in the opening ceremonies, complete with white paper doves, appropriate Olumjack theme music, and Adirondack lumberjack skill games. Waiting for the "signal" from the service dock to let us know that the health inspectors were coming so that we could hide beds under our tents to prove that we were not overcrowding the unit. Going to Temming's Silver Shop in Saranac Lake to buy addtional skipper pins, talking about how we would surprise an soon-to-be Skipper by going out on "The Capt. Aussie" and then jumping overboard to start the traditional "solo", sleeping in the boats during our "Island Hopping" overnight, reading "Cradle of the Deep" and later "The Chronicles of Narnia" at night, naming one of our new boats the "Dawntreader" and planning the christening. The annual Deer Island swim when Cindy talked all the way back to EIC. Remembering "tea" with the twin sisters who lived on Deer Island and Mr. Van Voorhees driving the "To and Fro" to Church Isle from the Wawbeek. Living all summer in the boathouse as mariners and waking up at 4 am to the sound of trout slapping their tails on the still water, sailing down a moonbeam on an illegal night-sail, watching mink race around under the boathouse, seeing Northern Lights for the first time, laughing until we cried while making up staff intro's, and crying every year during "re-ded" when we all would sing "Bless this house".
Playing guitar and leading songs after every meal, looking at all the song contests won by sailors/mariners, reading a log from the year 1938 when I was a camper and hearing that Trudy's daughter was now a sailor; reading the logs I had written.
It just doesn't seem that long ago and I can still hear the trees, remember the Tamaracks and see the Island as it was when I first stepped on to the service dock in 1963. I wish you all peace and that as you read this entry we all will be together in the spirit that is Eagle Island.

the smooth/sticky feeling of the log pole supports in the dining hall.

the way lake water splashes up through the slits in the service dock when there is a big wake.

duff.

they way the door onto the old dining hall porch looks so heavy but is really so light-- and how it creaks when you open it and slams shut behind you.

the smell of the books in the lodge.

the way the pine trees bend because of the prevailing wind.

the sound of halyards tapping against the masts of sailboats as they bob on their moorings.

the smell of bathing caps.

the sound of feet on alumi-docks.

that crunch and squish noise 20 pairs of shoes make walking on the service road.

wow, a sensory trip down EIC memory lane.

To Miss Henry, the answer to the trivia question is... "Miss Joyce". Momma PB and I are lifers (friends). I've found alot of lost souls through this Guest Book and remember a lot of things from our day like hanging on the TP porch back in the day of JC's. Glowing eyes has gotten past me, you'll have to clue me in. I'm well with two boys of my own but I guess we'll have to settle for family camp instead of new campers - maybe we'll see you there sometime soon, it would be great to see you. Have fun, our motto is...

Hi everybody, one of the three Somersians here while the other two are off bettering the world in Nicaragua. For all you guys who are as song-obsessed as I am, CATCH THE WIND WAS IN A CAR COMMERICAL!!! I saw it and I was like, "wow, that's Catch the Wind" and got very very excited. Despite my phenominal keeping-in-touch disabilities, I miss all you guys (most specifically '03-'04 session 3 sailors), not to mention being summoned to the "Bathrooms! NNNOOOOWWWWWWWWWW,", squishy cow in salad bar ice, flashlight strings in the murder mystery, snow flurries in August, colder than Alaska at 37 degrees, listening to Funyak belt Wicked, Pie for dinner and Junie B. Jones, Possibles vs. Peanuts on A Bowling Ball, Abominable Snowman competitions, singing to Annie (just Annie...),"Get your brother out of my clock," will it burn? (yes), milk cartons, and everything else i've missed. You guys have to come up for some King Kone sometime~ Miss you all like crazy

Love,
Melissa

It's so great to see so many new posts. It was pretty quiet for a while. Cindy in the past I found something on the web that you wrote about Eagle island, maybe it was your law school essay?

I can never resist giving advice, so to Tucker, and everyone who is beginning "real life" remember that Eagle Island is part of who you are, part of your foundation. If you think you've put it all behind you you'll just be denying part of your true self. When I look at people I often judge them by whether I would hire them to work at camp. My highest praise to someone (whether they know it or not) is, "you should work at camp."

That said, let me introduce a topic that was started at our dinner table in January. Share one memory of the island. "When you think of camp describe a moment that you remember." That's the topic. Run with it.

It has been a long while since I've signed this thing... but I've been thinking of the island so much lately it seems I just ended up here. This past summer was my first summer in 8 years that I didn't spend on the island, and I have to say... it hurt. I thought the bought of campsickness winter brought on was bad... but it is nothing compared to the feeling you get when you know there is an entire EIC summer going on without you... spending a whole summer away from the beauty in that place and those people... I'm sure many of you know just what I'm talking about. So.. I wanted to come here, and thank all of my fellow campers, counselors, fellow staff members, and my campers.. I can't describe the impact the experiences i've had with you have had on me. Thank you for so many wonderful summers.. and thank you for the memories. I hope you're all doing well wherever you may in the world, whatever you're doing. Perhaps I'll see a few of you at Women's Weekend this June. (I couldn't bear another summer without at least a bit of Eagle Island.)

Only Momma Polar Bear could really appreciate those early morning dips and dead cows. And a word to Miss Henry, do you remember "Here I am sitting on my stump, I am so pretty" name that camper! Sure do miss those magenta flamingos, they ended up everywhere I wonder how that happened Donna Sue - but most of all the people!

Hi all,
It is great to see familiar names in the postings and that the spirit of EIC is alive and well. My sisters and I have started a tradition of making an annual pilgrimage up to the ADKs/ EIC, where we do some serious lake swimming and refresh our memories of song lyrics.

Jesika and Rowena, congratulations on your weddings! Chris Van H. - where in Cali are you? If you email me I'll tell you the words to Sunny's Grace.

I'm in the Boston area working as an environmental lawyer these days. (I wrote about EIC in my law school admission essay!) If anyone is in Boston (and/or interested in the environmental field and/or wants to reminisce about camp), drop me a line

i am so excited, we are coming to family camp this year. my partner carol and i adopted 2 little boys this november and i am using them as an excuse to go back to the island. i can't believe it has been almost 21 years. that was the last summer i worked there-1985. i think i might have visited after that but those years a kind of a blur. i feel like it was yesterday. or at least last summer. but how could it have been 21 years ago?
how can we be old enough to have worked 21 years ago?

it is great to see so many names i remember from the past.

counting the days until family camp.

I love coming back to the guestbook every once in a while. Congratulations to Rowena and Jesika! So glad to hear that Mimi and Peter and Ellen are still seeing each other. Anne and Elyse and I still are too! Funny that as I'm getting ready to graduate college I'm thinking about how nice it would be to be EIC for the summer... I doubt it would pay the bills. bummer to having become the "real" person I always teased the counselors about!
